Putting a Stop to Energy Waste

Federal Buildings

The Federal government is the nation’s largest property owner and landlord, owning and/or operating nearly three billion square feet of floor space.

In total, Federal facilities consume about 0.65 quadrillion BTUs of energy (2005 data). This costs taxpayers nearly $3 billion in electricity.

Mandates to Improve Energy Performance
Legislation such as the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct 2005), and the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA 2007) were passed to improve Federal building energy performance and curb energy use. These two laws mandate Federal facilities to:

  • meet specific energy goals and regulatory requirements
  • design, operate, and maintain high performance green buildings
  • purchase energy efficient and U.S. made products

Most recently, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) provides  funding to enable Federal agencies to renovate and retrofit existing buildings, and build new buildings, to meet these aggressive energy and sustainability goals.
